Orebić doesn’t look like a place that once ran half the Adriatic’s merchant trade — but for two centuries, it did. By the 17th century, this small town on the Pelješac peninsula had become one of the key centers of Dubrovnik’s merchant navy. By the 19th century, Orebić’s own captains commanded as many as 90 sailing ships, crewed by over 2,000 sailors and 250 captains.
